Gender Development, Corruption Control, And Economic Growth Nexus: A Dynamic Panel Gmm Approach (2008-2023)

Abstract


This study examines the nexus between gender development, corruption control, and economic growth in ASEAN countries over the 2008-2023 period. Using dynamic panel Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation with data from ten ASEAN nations, we investigate how Gender Development Index (GDI) and Control of Corruption (COC) interact to influence GDP growth. The empirical results reveal significant dynamic relationships where lagged GDP growth positively affects current growth (β = 0.226, p < 0.01), while GDI demonstrates a statistically significant negative impact on economic growth (β = -66.74, p < 0.05). Control of corruption exhibits a positive and highly significant effect on growth (β = 2.23, p < 0.001). However, the interaction term between GDI and COC shows no significant moderating effect, suggesting that gender development and corruption control operate through independent channels. Panel unit root tests confirm stationarity of variables, and the Hansen J-statistic validates instrument validity. The findings contribute to understanding the multidimensional determinants of economic growth in developing economies and provide policy implications for simultaneous investment in gender equality and governance quality to maximize growth outcomes in ASEAN region.
