BEING A YOUNG MUSLIM IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD : WHY ENGLISH MATTERS

Kania Winda Azzahra, Muhammad Rafi’i

Abstract

Globalization has increased cross-cultural interaction, international movement, and
digital communication, establishing English as the dominant global lingua franca. This linguistic
reality creates both opportunities and challenges for young Muslims as they negotiate their
religious identity, global citizenship, and socioeconomic status. This article examines the
importance of English proficiency for young Muslims living in a globalized society. The study
uses a qualitative descriptive approach based on recent scholarly literature to investigate how
English serves as a medium for education, religious representation, intercultural
communication, and global participation. The findings show that English proficiency enables
young Muslims to have access to global knowledge, overcome misconceptions, and actively
participate in international debate without jeopardizing Islamic principles.
