The Use of English in Daily Life in Integrated Islamic Elementary Schools to Improve Students’ Speaking Skills

Nazla Azzuhra, Muhammad Rafi’i

Abstract

At the elementary school level, speaking skill development in English as a Foreign
Language (EFL) contexts continues to be a major concern. Academic training is interwoven with
Islamic beliefs and character education at integrated Islamic elementary schools, which offer a
unique educational environment. This study investigates how students' speaking abilities in
Integrated Islamic Elementary Schools are enhanced by the use of English in everyday
classroom activities. Data were gathered using a qualitative descriptive research approach
using document analysis, teacher and student interviews, and classroom observations. The
results show that regular exposure to English through everyday activities—like salutations,
classroom exchanges, and basic communicative, exchanges—significantly improves students'
fluency, vocabulary usage, confidence, and pronunciation. Additionally, combining English with
Islamic principles fosters a relevant and encouraging learning atmosphere that promotes
involvement. According to the study's findings, young students at Integrated Islamic Elementary
Schools can develop their speaking abilities by regularly using English in classroom activities.
